Black History Month Facts

  • Madame CJ Walker was the first American businesswoman to become a millionaire. She created hair products for African-American hair.

  • Booker T. Washington was the first African-American to be featured on a U.S. postage stamp.

  • Willie Thrower from Michigan State University was the first African-American to play quarterback in the NFL.

  • Lincoln University in Pennsylvania is the first institution of higher education founded for African-Americans. It paved the way for the 104 other historically Black colleges and universities, which have produced distinguished alums like Thurgood Marshall, MLK Jr, Spike Lee, Oprah and many others.
