Committee Spotlight – Education Committee
Sean Perryman works as Counsel for the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. In that role, he advises Democratic members of the committee on policy and legal issues. Prior to working on the Hill, Sean practiced civil litigation. A Vanderbilt law graduate, he’s considers himself a passionate advocate for marginalized communities.
His top goal for the Education Committee is to shift the conversation throughout the County from the “achievement gap” to the “opportunity gap.” “We need to move away from the emphasis on students of colors alleged failure to achieve and instead talk about the systemic issues that led to these disparities in test scores, including a dual housing market and discrimination in hiring qualified black teachers in Fairfax County,” Perryman said. One of his other goals is to create support groups facilitated by the NAACP for teachers of color. “My wife teaches in the County and I want teachers to know this organization supports them and create an environment where they can build a network with each other,” Perryman said.
The Education Committee welcomes new members so stay tuned for their upcoming committee meeting schedule OR you can contact Sean at education@fairfaxnaacp.org .
